Mitchell Pitts
Full-Time MBA
“Looking forward, I’d like to work alongside engineers on large-scale infrastructure projects to enhance communities worldwide. My goal is to oversee the financial and logistical aspects of these projects, ensuring they are impactful and sustainable.”
Mitchell Pitts brings a unique perspective to the Boston University Questrom School of Business, drawing on his background in the U.S. Marine Corps. His transition into graduate school isn’t typical, as he’s accustomed to the self-directed learning style of his online undergraduate program, which he completed while serving. Now enrolled in one of Questrom’s residential MBA programs, he’s experiencing in-person engagement with classmates and faculty for the first time—a shift he describes as challenging yet rewarding, viewing his education as a “full-time job.”
Before beginning his MBA, Mitchell’s career path led him from satellite communications to a position with the Department of State’s embassy group, resulting in deployments abroad, including to South Sudan, Vienna, and Bangkok. His experiences in South Sudan, where he witnessed a humanitarian crisis firsthand, deeply shaped his sense of purpose. Motivated to make a positive impact, he organized a fundraiser that provided sports equipment, snacks, and supplies for children at a local orphanage. “We would go there to spend time with them,” he explains. This pivotal experience reinforced his commitment to using his skills for the greater good, a mission he continues to pursue in his studies and future goals.
As a squad leader in the Marines, Mitchell embraced a transformational leadership style, focused on developing junior Marines not only as service members but as individuals. Reflecting on the contrast between military and business leadership, he notes that while the military emphasizes hierarchy and authority, business often prioritizes collaboration and softer communication styles—insights he’s already applying in his MBA teamwork.
“Looking forward, I’d like to work alongside engineers on large-scale infrastructure projects to enhance communities worldwide. My goal is to oversee the financial and logistical aspects of these projects, ensuring they are impactful and sustainable.” A mentor he met abroad, with extensive experience in economic restructuring, has been instrumental in helping him define this vision.
Mitchell’s decision to attend Questrom was inspired by a chance conversation at a social event with the Argentinian ambassador to Thailand and his wife, a BU alumna. After a half-hour discussion, they encouraged him to consider BU for its international focus and diverse community. “Based on what you’ve told me, this is the perfect fit for you,” the ambassador’s wife assured him.
Mitchell’s journey to business school reflects his commitment to social entrepreneurship and global development. For him, Questrom’s MBA program is a platform to blend his military and international experiences with advanced business skills, empowering him to create positive change on a global scale. His story is a testament to the unique and valuable perspective veterans bring to the business world, shaped by their dedication to service and passion for social impact.
