Sarah Samuels, MBA’12, Wants to Empower Kids to Invest

August 16, 2024

Sarah Samuels, MBA ’12, believes in empowering children with financial knowledge. Her new children’s book Braving Our Savings, uses storytelling to instill healthy financial habits and bravery in young minds.

Sarah is a partner at NEPC, LLC, one of the industry’s largest investment consulting firms, with over $1.6T in assets under advisement. In a recent interview with WBUR, Sarah shared her inspiring journey to success in the investment industry. Sarah began her career as an administrative assistant at Wellington Management Company, and came from  a humble background without knowledge of the investment  industry. Seeking role models, Sarah found other successful women in the industry who encouraged her to take risks and prioritize education.

After completing an MBA in Boston University’s Questrom School of Business and launching a successful investment career, Sarah faced a significant personal challenge when her marriage ended. Amid the divorce, she realized that her career in investments could sustain her and her family.

“So many things were scary during that time, but I kept choosing to be brave, if only for 30 seconds” Sarah noted. This newfound strength from financial independence empowered her to share her moments of bravery with her daughters and to make informed choices around money, Braving Our Savings was born from those conversations with her daughters.

About Braving Our Savings, by Sarah Samuels, MBA’12

Braving Our Savings features a young girl who wants to get her ears pierced but can’t afford it. The girl’s mother teaches her how to grow money through investing, turning her into a role model for young readers. The book combines storytelling with practical education about financial concepts, making the world of investing engaging and relatable for kids. Jonathan Jones, New England Patriots football player, says of Braving Our Savings: “Financial fluency can be a game-changer for children by breaking generations-long cycles of making ends meet. Braving Our Savings takes the first step in inspiring children to invest, be brave and thrive.”

Sarah is now focused on bringing her message to a wider audience. Through the “30 Seconds of Bravery” movement, along with the book, Sarah hopes to empower young minds with the knowledge and confidence to invest in their futures.
