Monica Parker-James, Associate Dean For Career Services, Discusses Jittery Job Market For The Class Of 2023
March 30, 2023
The Wall Street Journal recently published an article featuring Monica Parker-James, Associate Dean for Career Services, discussing the uneager job market graduating seniors are facing.
A new generation of graduates is about to graduate, and the job market has suddenly become less enthusiastic about hiring new grads. College offices report that employers are taking a leisurely approach to hiring graduating seniors this year. There has been a marked difference from the past two years, when many companies made offers within a week or two of school starting, staging bidding wars to hire interns and graduating seniors. Alphabet Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc., two companies that laid off thousands of workers in recent months, went on hiring sprees when the Classes of 2021 and 2022 graduated.
This April, Questrom will host its first-ever “just in time” virtual career fair, about six weeks before graduation. This event is aimed to help undergraduate students who wanted jobs in tech, broaden their search. Parker-James states,
“This year feels like there’s a wait-and-see”.
