This past weekend, Kate Barrand (Questrom ’85) was honored with Boston University‘s Distinguished Alumni Award for her dedication to improving the lives of vulnerable children through her leadership role at the Horizons for Homeless Children.

In her speech introducing Kate, Questrom School of Business, Boston University Dean Susan Fournier highlighted her exceptional impact.

“In 2023, Horizons served 103,000 meals and healthy snacks to children, accounting for 80 percent of their daily nutrition. More than 60 playspaces operated in shelters throughout the state, with over 18,000 child visits. Two hundred seventy-two children accessed the Horizons Early Education Center. As ever, the human figures say much more than the financial ones.” – Dean Susan Fournier

Under Barrand’s leadership, Horizons achieved remarkable growth, increasing revenue by 81%, expanding services by 30%, and improving wages for childcare workers. Kate’s impact extends beyond Horizons, as she collaborates with local government and non-profit partners to support migrant families and advocates for systemic changes to alleviate poverty.

Kate shared the distinction with four other extraordinary BU Terriers, Michelle Hurd (CFA ’88), Em Nguyen (COM’15), Daniel Levy (CAMED’80), and Uzo Aduba (CFA’05).
