We hope your Black History Month is off to a great start! As we delve into the theme of “African Americans and the Arts,” designated by the ASALH, our goal is to spotlight and celebrate the profound contributions of Black Americans to visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, language, film, music, and more. There is so much to get involved in this month. To kickstart your month-long celebration, we’ve compiled a list of engaging events and valuable resources for you to explore.
Feb 6, 5-8 PM, 121 Bay State Rd – Celebrating Black History Month with the Boston Public Schools ALANA Network: Film Screening of BlackNBlack An opportunity to engage with the community and enjoy a thought-provoking film that celebrates Black culture.
Feb 6, 6-7 PM at MHS – Author Talk- Master Slave Husband Wife: An Epic Journey from Slavery to Freedom – by Dr. Ilyon Woo.
Feb 7, 10:30 AM -1 PM, 1350 Blue Hill Ave Mattapan MA 02126 – Revolutionary Black Musicians Presents Get On Up: The James Brown Story – Explore the life of the legendary James Brown through this film screening at the Boston Public Library.
Feb 8, 1 City Hall Square, Boston – Gender in the Workforce Through the Black Lens – Gain valuable insights into the intersection of gender and the workforce.
Feb 9, 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM at 2136 Washington Street Boston, MA – Selections From Songs of Free Men: Honoring Baldwin’s Centennial – An evening dedicated to commemorating Black History Month, featuring the music of Negro Spirituals and narratives honoring James Baldwin.
Feb 10, 1- 4 PM, Online – Introduction to African American Genealogy – This virtual 3-hour class will be an introduction to African American genealogy, focusing on resources and online tools that can be helpful in tracing family histories.
Feb 10, 7:00–9:15 PM at the Harry and Mildred Remis Auditorium – Film at MFA: The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks – Explore the life of Rosa Parks through this intriguing film screening.
Feb 13, 5:30 PM – 808 Commonwealth Ave – Resisting the Black Scare/ Red Scare with Charisse Burden Stelly – Charisse Burden-Stelly, discusses her new book, Black Scare/Red Scare: Theorizing Capitalist Racism in the United States.
Feb 17, 6:30 PM at Tsai Performance Center – BUASO Culture Show 2024: One Africa – Dress to impress! BU African Students Organization will shine a spotlight on all things African through fashion, music, dance, and artistry.
Feb 17, 12 PM – 3 PM at 11 Rhoades Street, Dorchester – Roller Skating with the Melanin Roll – Lace up your skates and enjoy a fun-filled 90’s themed evening.
Feb 20, 5:45 PM – 8:30 PM at the Howard Thurman Center – BBSA Black History Trivia Night: Join us for Black History Trivia Night! We’ll be exploring all things trivia, so gather your team or come solo to test your knowledge. Challenge yourself to see how much trivia you can conquer while enjoying food, games, drinks, and the chance to win exciting prizes. Don’t miss out on this engaging and entertaining evening!

Feb 25, 8 – 12 PM, 100 W 2nd St. Boston, MA – UMOJA Gala: Night at the Masquerade – attend a glamorous masquerade gala hosted by BU UMOJA.
Feb 27, 5 – 7:30 PM, 1350 Blue Hill Ave, Mattapan MA – Revolutionary Black Musicians Film Series: Respect – This is the final film in the Mattapan Branch’s Revolutionary Black Musicians series, featuring films about groundbreaking Black musical artists.
Feb 29, 6 – 8:30 PM – “Black Trans Poetics” -Join us for a poetry reading with Cameron Awkward-Rich, Levi Cain, and JR Mahung.
