Delina, Janetos Guest Edit Special Journal Issue on Futures of Energy Systems

ERSScoverPardee Center postdoctoral associate Laurence Delina and Director Prof. Anthony Janetos have guest edited a special journal issue consisting of 24 accounts, stories, narratives, and perspectives on the futures of energy systems. The special volume has been published in the journal Energy Research and Social Science (Vol. 35, January 2018).

The collection covers disparate geographic locations, disciplinary foundations, conceptual frameworks, and methodological choices by its authors. The special issue is divided into three categories: The global South and their energy futures; Citizens and communities in the futures of energy; and Visions, discourses, and ways of thinking about the futures of energy. This breadth points to the many ways of imagining the sociotechnical aspects of energy futures, and of making these expectations real and durable.

The call for papers for the special issue attracted the largest response in the history of the journal. Delina and Janetos received 85 expressions of interest, of which they invited 72 to participate in the peer review process. Despite the breadth of submissions and accepted papers, Delina and Janetos emphasize that the collective contributions should be taken as “works-in-progress” in the quest to understand, analyze, and critique the plurality of the futures of energy systems.
