Faculty Research Fellow Robinson W. Fulweiler Wins Metcalf Cup and Prize for Excellence in Teaching
Robinson (Wally) Fulweiler, an Associate Professor of Biology (jointly with Earth & Environment) and a Faculty Research Fellow at the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, was recently announced as the recipient of the 2019 Metcalf Cup and Prize for Excellence in Teaching, the University’s highest teaching honor.
The Metcalf Cup and Prize and Metcalf Awards were established in 1973 by a gift from the late alumnus and BU Trustee, Dr. Arthur G.B. Metcalf, to create “a systematic procedure for the review of the quality of teaching at Boston University and the identification and advancement of those members of the faculty who excel as teachers.” The criteria used to select winners are excellence in teaching in the context of a research institution; challenge and ambition; engagement with students; and thoughtful evaluation of student work.
Each year, the Provost’s Faculty Teaching Awards Committee selects one Metcalf Cup and Prize winner, who receives a stipend of $10,000, and up to two Metcalf Award winners, who receive stipends of $5,000. Prof. Fulweiler, along with the two recipients of the Metcalf Award, Prof. Neal Fleisher (Goldman School of Dental Medicine) and Prof. Gregory Stoller (Questrom School of Business), will be honored at the 2019 Commencement ceremony.

As a Pardee Center Faculty Research Fellow, Prof. Fulweiler is researching the rates of denitrification associated with oyster aquaculture in different coastal environments. In the fall of 2019, she will convene a workshop for oyster farmers and scientists to assess the current state of knowledge surrounding nitrogen removal associated with oyster aquaculture, and develop a path forward for including nitrogen removal capacity in future coastal water quality management plans.
