Next Pardee House Seminar: Science, Diplomacy and Development

The Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future will hold a lunch seminar on‘Future Challenges: Science, Diplomacy and Development’ on Thursday, July 23, 2009, featuring Dr. Zulfiqar Bhutta, Amb. Harry Barnes and Dr. Patricia Wrightson. The Seminar will be moderated by Prof. Jerry Keusch, Director of the Boston University Global Health Initiative at the School of Public Health.
Dr. Zulfiqar Bhutta is Professor and Chair of the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at the Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan. He is a visitor at the Boston University School of Public Health this summer. he will focus on the challenges and state of public health science in Pakistan and the importance of international and regional cooperation on public health science.
Amb. Harry Barnes served as a career foreign service officer, including serving as Ambassador to Romania, India and Chile. He was also the Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of Personnel in the State Department. He was also was the director of the Carter Center’s Human Rights and Conflict Resolution Programs from 1994-2000. He will focus on issues related to science diplomacy, especially in the context of South Asia.
Dr. Patricia Wrightson is the Director of the Committee on Scientific Communication and National Security at the National Academies in Washington D.C. The committee’s purpose is to promote sustained cooperation between the scientific and security communities. Dr. Wrightson will focus her remarks on the challenge as well as the importance of international scientific cooperation, especially with and in South Asia.
The Seminar will be held at Pardee House (67 Bay State Road, Boston) on Thursday, July 23, 2009.
The Pardee Seminar Series focuses on a variety of issues and invites experts from different disciplines to discuss the long-range challenges and trends in that particular issue.
