Link to library resources through Blackboard… successfully!

Creating a link to a research article within Blackboard isn’t always easy.  You think you have the link, and then when you test it out, something is wrong (especially when off campus)!

To get your link correct you must have the EZproxy bit.

Many research articles are available to BU through library subscriptions: we have to pay for these things.  EZproxy is the way the BU community can prove some affiliation with BU before access is granted.

Please see the IS&T instructions on how to add the EZproxy string to the URL, so that anyone following the link can provide proof of BU affiliation.

New Resource: Embase

The BU Libraries now have access to
Embase.  Embase includes over 6 million records and more than 2,900 journals that are not covered in MEDLINE. It also includes conference abstracts from biomedical, drug and medical device conferences dating back to 2009. Embase currently indexes 6,000+ conferences covering over 2 million conference abstracts.

Embase is the database equivalent of EXCERPTA MEDICA. It is international in scope and covers a broad range of cross-disciplinary subjects such as allied health, basic sciences, genetics, pharmacology, biotechnology, allied health sciences, environmental health, public health, forensics and more. It is an essential research database in support of the increasing numbers of requests for librarian assistance for systematic reviews, and enhances access to high quality global information sources for Boston University.

The collection may be accessed directly through this link http://library.bu.edu/embase or through the BU Libraries Search.

If you need any help with your research, please contact a reference librarian.

Open Digital Pedagogy Discussion, 12/15, 12-1pm

On Thursday, December 15, the BU Libraries’ Digital Scholarship Services will be hosting a discussion on open digital pedagogy: how do we define it and what does/could it look like at BU?

We’ll be using the article “Open Digital Pedagogy = Critical Pedagogy” as our jumping-off point for the discussion; you may also find it helpful to look at the “Open” chapter in Digital Pedagogy in the Humanities: Concepts, Models, and Experiments for some examples of open digital pedagogy in action.

The discussion will be held on Thursday, December 15, 12-1pm, in the Mugar Memorial Library, Administration Office, Large Conference Room.

Directions: To get to the discussion location, please go to the GSU Link; enter the bank lobby opposite the Mugar main entrance; and go up the stairs to the administrative suite. The large conference room will be on your left. If you need to reach the room without using stairs, please use the elevator just inside the main entrance to the library to go to the third floor. Out of the elevator, go around the wall and to the left into the administrative suite.

This is the third in a series of Open Meetups, monthly informal gatherings that will bring together members of the BU community to engage in issues of open access, open data, and open education. Contact Anna Newman at newmanaa@bu.edu with any questions.

Open Access and Publication Quality, 11/29, 12-1pm

Open Access logoThe scholarly communication landscape is rapidly changing. The growth of open access journals, new forms of peer review, and alternative ideas about publication impact are provoking new questions about how we evaluate published scholarship: What criteria can we use to evaluate a scholarly journal? How can we protect ourselves and our community from predatory publishers? Are citation-based metrics still relevant in evaluating journal impact?

Join us on Tuesday, November 29, 12-1 pm, in Mugar Library, Room 302 (Estin Room), as we discuss these and other questions about evaluating publication quality.

If you would like to read more about this topic before the meetup, recommended reading is Peter Suber’s “Thoughts on prestige, quality, and open access,” (particularly points 1, 4, 8, and 12) from the September 2, 2008, issue of the SPARC Open Access Newsletter.

This is the second in a series of Open Meetups, informal monthly gatherings that will bring together members of the BU community to engage in issues of open access, open data, and open education.

Eleanor Roberta Walker gift

CONSTRUCTION AND E~ALUATION OF AN INSTRUMENT TO DETEru.:rNE TEACHER ,,!ORALE IN A SCHOOL SYSTEMThe Pickering Educational Resources Library is glad to accept into our collections a Master's thesis written at the Boston University School of Education by Eleanor Roberta Walker in 1953.

The thesis, Construction and Evaluation of an Instrument to Determine Teacher Morale in a School System, addresses the problem of teacher burnout - still a very hot topic today, more than 50 years later.

After earning a teaching certificate from Wheelock Kindergarten Training School in 1933, Miss Walker became a life-long educator teaching kindergarten and later first grade to generations of families in the town of Belmont MA.  While continuing to teach, Miss Walker earned her BA in 1942 and Master in Education 1953 both from Boston University. Her dedication to the profession is on display within the thesis. The library thanks Polly Walker, Roberta Walker Miksad, Debbie Walker Michelsen and Eben Walker for this donation in honor of their Aunt.
