Nicole “Coco” Holbrook (’18) and Jasmine Gomez (’16) were honored by the Massachusetts chapter of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) at the organization’s 2018 Annual Testimonial Dinner.

Holbrook received the Student Award for her revival of the Boston University NLG chapter, “The Radical Lawyers.” As a founding member of the group’s revitalization, Holbook continues to serve on the chapter’s board.

Throughout her tenure, Holbrook has helped facilitate members’ annual attendance at Yale’s Rebellious Lawyering conference. In her 1L year, the group created a letter-writing campaign about proposed bills within Massachusetts legislature.

During her 3L year, Holbrook helped coordinate the Movement Lawyering Networking Event and created the Resistance Series. The latter aimed to create discussion and discourse events at all of the Massachusetts law schools with NLG chapters.

“I am excited and honored to be celebrated in this way by the Massachusetts NLG chapter. It was definitely a surprise when I got the phone call informing me of my award, especially since I know so many other NLG students in Massachusetts doing good work,” Holbrook says.

“I am honored that the board of the MA chapter of the National Lawyers Guild decided to celebrate my involvement in the guild, especially since I have long admired their work and looked up to individual members of the board,” she shares.

Jasmine Gomez received the Rob Doyle Award, named for the Massachusetts chapter’s late co-founder, for her work in community advocacy. A Democracy Honors fellow and attorney at Free Speech for People, an organization that advocates for campaign finance reform, Gomez focuses on examining the power of monetary contributions in politics, analyzing policy implications with respect to the First Amendment, and promoting political equality.

Gomez also advocates for the LGTBQ+ community, social justice, and against white supremacy in her free time. She is an active member of the Massachusetts NLG chapter and continues to volunteer at the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law School.

Gomez was Holbrook’s student mentor during Holbrook’s 1L year. “She is someone I continue to look towards for inspiration,” Holbrook says. “It’s particularly rewarding and special to me to the receive the award when she is being awarded too.”
