Biography
Liliana Mangiafico’s first position as an attorney was in the legal department of the Venezuelan oil company, Petróleos de Venezuela (Lagoven). In 1994, she came to the United States to pursue an LLM at Harvard Law School. Upon graduation, she remained at Harvard as a visiting researcher in the areas of Latin American Privatization of Natural Resources. After obtaining her JD from Northeastern University School of Law in 2001, she worked in the Greater Boston Legal Services’ family law unit. Also in 2001, she joined Advocates, Inc, a nonprofit organization providing services for the disabled and mentally ill. At Advocates, she directed the Advocacy and Legal Services program, assisting individuals and families with eviction prevention, denial of Social Security and welfare assistance, guardianships , immigration and family law matters. Her work was recognized in 2011 when she was named among the “Top Women of Law” by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly. Also in 2011, she was appointed to serve on the Framingham Advisory Board for the Reform of Welfare by the commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance. In 2015, she transitioned to full-time law teaching. She has taught at Albany Law School, where she was a visiting professor and the director of the Family Violence Litigation Clinic, and at Penn State University/Dickinson Law, where she created, developed and taught the housing and welfare law curriculum for the Community Law Clinic. In addition to teaching at Boston University School of Law, Liliana currently teaches at Northeastern University School of Law in the J.D. and LL.M programs and the School of Policy in the College of Sciences and Humanities, as well as the Suffolk University College of Arts and Sciences. Born and raised in Caracas, Professor Mangiafico is fluent in Spanish, French, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese. She is an avid triathlete, photographer and nature lover.
