The Intersection of Privacy and Law Enforcement
Jump To
Woodrow Hartzog will speak at “The Intersection of Privacy and Law Enforcement” on April 18, 2023 from 3:00-4:00 pm in Washington DC. The virtual talk, put on by the R Street Institute, will explore federal data privacy and security legislation with a focus on law enforcement-related provisions; the concerns about how some law enforcement agencies use data brokers or other means to gather intelligence data; how certain provisions in a federal law could hinder law enforcement investigations; and how we can obtain the right balance between data privacy and community safety.
In the 118th Congress, there continues to be significant interest in passing a federal comprehensive data privacy and security law like the American Data Privacy and Protection Act (ADPPA) from the last Congress. Currently, the United States operates without a comprehensive data privacy and security law. This directly impacts consumers, industry and national security. One area of debate is how to ensure a comprehensive federal privacy and security law appropriately considers law enforcement’s access to personal data.
