Moot Court Boards & Intramural Teams
Third-year students who participated in Stone during their second year are eligible for membership on BU Law-sponsored intramural moot court teams. Team members write the brief, practice oral arguments with teammates and faculty and represent BU Law at the respective competitions. Team members on BU Law’s official teams (those listed on the application and identified below) also serve as preceptors, scoring participants in the Stone or Albers Competitions. For information about the Vis or Jessup teams, please use the sidebar on the right to navigate to those pages.
Application Information
The applications for the 2025–2026 Teams and Boards are now open! We have two separate applications: One for our boards and the National Moot Court team, and one for traveling moot court teams. If you are potentially interested in either a board/NMC or a traveling team, you will need to fill out BOTH applications (links are posted below)!
IMPORTANT NOTES: To be eligible for any BU Law-funded Moot Court team (whether those listed on the application or those organized by a student group or individual students), interested students MUST have competed in the Edward C. Stone Moot Court Competition, or, if a transfer student, its equivalent. Thus, if you are interested in competing on any BU-funded moot court team as a 3L, you must compete in the Stone competition as a 2L. If you are going to be a 2L and wish to compete in an outside competition later in your 2L year, you must do Stone in the fall AND you must acquire outside funding (only rising 3Ls can apply for teams funded through the Advocacy Programs). This rule does not apply to Jessup or the Vis, which have their own separate requirements.
Additionally, all moot court team members (on the National Moot Court team or any traveling team except the Jessup and Vis) are eligible to register for the Moot Court Competitions course. In the fall, Jen McCloskey offers the Brief Writing course and in the spring, she offers the Oral Advocacy course. Each course is one credit, graded C/NC, and is designed to help prepare students to compete and to provide support when students are serving as the Stone/Albers preceptors.

Competition Descriptions
Moot Court competitions vary in their subject matter, deadlines, and overall timing. Certain competitions (like the ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition) have both a regional and, if teams reach a final round in the regional, national component.
Dozens of moot court competitions take place every year. South Texas College of Law compiles a guide each summer which may be useful to you as you consider which competitions to list and rank: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_J2TBdbj8OBvNuYzjKoQDHrbRzjCByHq/view?usp=sharing. Note that the guide was last updated in summer 2022. Note also that competition website URLs frequently change; if a URL no longer works, simply Google the competition name.
Below are some competitions that we’ve either competed in recently, or which may be of interest. This is not a comprehensive list.
- ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition (local regional; possibility of nationals): General federal constitutional or statutory law issues.
- NBLSA Thurgood Marshall Moot Court Competition (New England area regional; possibility of nationals): Public law and civil rights. [Note: this was formerly the Frederick Douglass Moot Court Competition; it is NOT the same as the Federal Bar Association’s Thurgood Marshall Competition.]
- NNALSA Moot Court Competition (location varies): Native American legal issues.
- Seigenthaler-Sutherland Cup National First Amendment Competition (Washington, D.C.): First Amendment issues relating to either free speech or religion clauses.
- Gibbons Criminal Procedure (at Seton Hall): Criminal procedure.
- Irving R. Kaufman Memorial Securities Law Competition (New York City): Securities law.
- Judge John R. Brown Admiralty Moot Court Competition (location varies): Admiralty law.
- Jeffrey G. Miller National Environmental Law Moot Court Competition (at Pace Law): Environmental law.
- AIPLA Giles Sutherland Rich Memorial Moot Court Competition (local regional; possibility of nationals): IP law.
