Meet the Newest Students of BU Law From their law school aspirations to their favorite fictional lawyers, get to know some of BU Law’s newest JD and LLM students.
This fall, Boston University School of Law welcomed hundreds of new and transfer JD and LLM students across its in-person and online programs. While our students come from many different states across the nation and countries around the world, they are united by their excitement to join the BU Law community and a passion for the legal profession.
As our newest students get to know BU Law, we wanted to get to know them as well. Throughout orientation week, The Record talked with a few of the JD and LLM students about what brought them to BU Law, their excitement for the coming years, and more.
Why did you want to go to law school?
“I’ve always wanted to go to law school. I really like arguing and writing. I did mock trial in high school and college, which kind of got me more interested in it. So, it’s exciting to finally be here and finally be doing it.” – Devika Narendra (’28)
“I was a paralegal for a few years prior, and you know, there’s always that ceiling. And I don’t like ceilings.” – Salem Desir (LLM’26), Graduate Tax Program
“I wanted to go to law school so that I could have a career that is both challenging and fulfilling in a way that I can help make people’s lives a little bit better.” – Emily R. Collins (’28)
“I was raised in Shanghai and I have been working as a lawyer for four years, so I would like to continue to pursue higher education and improve my future career in China.” – Mingna Jiang (LLM’26), American Law Program
“I wanted to help businesses grow. I was a finance major, but I wanted to serve on a more personal level, the level of which a finance job doesn’t encompass all of. So, I want to be a lawyer.” – Alex Guo (’28)

What are you most excited for in law school?
“I’m excited to see all the people and the diverse community that is here and be a part of that and bring my own perspectives to it.” – John V. Larchenko (’28)

“I’m honestly just excited to learn new things every day. I’m fascinated by reading anything about the law – sometimes I’ll go through and read the terms and agreements on Apple and get caught up on that. I really enjoy it and I think it’s a great path for me.” – Presley Cable (’28)

Why did you choose BU Law?
“I love the city of Boston. I went to undergrad at Northeastern and I wanted to be around this community – I treat it like home now. I’m from the South, but I love living in Boston and BU was just the perfect space for me.” – Alex Guo (’28)
“I have at least three colleagues who have been to BU and also it is known in the Philippines that the Banking and Financial Law program at BU is very good.” – Michael Cucio (LLM’26)
“I chose the Two-Year LLM program because I am from Puerto Rico and at my law school in Puerto Rico, we read and wrote in English, but we didn’t speak it a lot. So, I wanted to practice my English speaking and listening to finally litigate in English.” – Andrea Sosa Ruiz (LLM’26), Two-Year LLM in Banking and Financial Law
“I chose BU because of the strong sense of community and support that I felt from the faculty and staff that I had met and talked to over the past year. A big part of it was also the sections: I went to a very small college with a very low student-to-faculty ratio, and that is the same situation here at BU, so I really appreciated that.” – Robert Goldsberry (’28)

Why did you choose Boston?
“It’s the best city in the US. I wanted to live here – I knew that for a long time, so I’m happy to be in the area now.” – Wyatt P.F. Cirbo (’28)
“I did a program with the Boston Red Sox called Lindos Sueños when I was in junior and senior year of high school. Ten American students were paired with ten Dominican students. In the morning, we built houses, and in the afternoon, we played baseball at the Dominican Academy facilities. I absolutely love Boston, and I was super excited to actually get the opportunity to live here and not just visit as a guest.” – Presley Cable (’28)
“I chose Boston because it is a very diverse community, it’s really accessible and easy to get around and experience, which is a lot different than where I grew up which is a lot smaller of a town. It’s definitely a new experience.” – Robert Goldsberry (’28)
“My family is originally from the East Coast, so I grew up visiting Boston and absolutely fell in love with it, so I knew I wanted to end up back here.” – Devika Narendra (’28)
