Boston University School of Law To Launch Certificate in AI for Law Practice

Boston University School of Law is pleased to announce the launch of a new Certificate in AI for Law Practice, designed to prepare graduates for success in a rapidly evolving legal landscape transformed by AI technologies.

“Today’s lawyers must be not only conversant with AI tools but also capable of deploying them responsibly and effectively,” said Vice Dean Stephen Marks. “These technologies present extraordinary opportunities but also significant risks. Our program will ensure that BU Law graduates are equipped to navigate both—using AI to enhance their practice while maintaining the highest ethical and professional standards.”

According to the 2024 Artificial Intelligence TechReport from the American Bar Association (ABA), the share of law firms reporting current use of AI‐based tools nearly tripled from 11% in 2023 to 30% in 2024.* This significant increase underscores the importance for new attorneys to enter the profession with AI‐fluency and critical judgment.

Beginning in the fall of 2026, the program will integrate AI training throughout all three years of the JD curriculum. Students will receive hands-on instruction in the use of advanced, law-focused AI platforms—such as Harvey, Claude, and other emerging technologies—alongside foundational coursework in legal writing, research, and analysis. Through this immersive approach, students will learn to draft complaints, motions, and other legal documents with the aid of AI tools, while developing a deep understanding of their capabilities and limitations.

Graduates who complete the program will earn a formal certificate, signaling to prospective employers their readiness to practice in an AI-enabled legal environment. Legal employers have expressed growing interest in candidates who possess both technical fluency and a sophisticated understanding of the ethical dimensions of AI in law.

“Employers have long been impressed by the excellent preparation of BU Law graduates,” shared Mandie LeBeau, Assistant Dean for Career Development & Public Service. “The introduction of this Certificate in AI for Law Practice is an excellent step forward and ensures that our graduates are ready from day one to work with AI-augmented workflows, smarter legal research tools, and evolving best practices. This means they bring both substantive legal skills and the mindset to thrive in a modern practice environment.”
