Boston University School of Law Appoints Timothy Duncan as Director of Its New AI Program
Boston University School of Law has appointed Professor Timothy Duncan as director of its new AI Program. The BU Law AI Program will provide the curriculum, training, and tools necessary for students to learn how to use artificial intelligence skillfully and wisely, preparing them for the AI-enabled legal practice of the future.
Director Duncan, who teaches Artificial Intelligence Law and other technology-related law courses at BU Law, is a nationally recognized expert at the intersection of law, technology, and finance. He previously served as Head of Technology for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and has held leadership and advisory roles across academia, government, and industry.
“Artificial intelligence is already transforming legal practice and legal education,” notes Director Duncan. “Our goal is to ensure BU Law graduates are not only fluent in these new tools, but also thoughtful about their ethical and professional use. This program will help them stand out as future leaders in a rapidly evolving profession.”
The BU Law AI Program will bring artificial intelligence directly into the classroom, offering students practical training and providing faculty with new AI-related teaching and research resources. A burgeoning leader in the study and application of AI in law, BU Law is dedicated to helping the legal profession navigate this transformation by producing scholarship, developing best practices, and training future lawyers to deploy AI tools ethically and strategically.
In October 2025, BU Law launched its partnership with Harvey, a leading provider of domain-specific generative artificial intelligence designed for legal and professional services. BU Law students, faculty, and staff will have hands-on access to the Harvey platform, which will enable the production of course content and an overall curriculum that will prepare students to employ generative AI effectively, efficiently, and ethically on day one of legal practice.
“With Tim’s leadership, BU Law is positioned to be at the forefront of legal education in the age of AI,” says Dean Angela Onwuachi-Willig. “This program reflects our commitment to equipping our students not just with knowledge of the law, but also with the tools and judgment to practice it in a world transformed by technology.”
