Alvin Yearwood (’86) Appointed as New Administrative Judge in Bronx Supreme Court

The court system has named acting Supreme Court Justice Alvin Yearwood as the new administrative judge for criminal matters in Bronx Supreme Court.

Yearwood was appointed to New York City Criminal Court in 2003, and was reappointed to the bench three times. In January 2010, he was designated an acting Supreme Court justice in the Bronx and, in that role, he has presided over bustling court parts and conducted hundreds of felony trials, according to a court system news release.

Prior to his appointment to the bench, he worked as a prosecutor in both the Bronx and Nassau County. The Boston University School of Law also worked with several law firms and maintained a solo law practice.

Supreme Court Justice Tamiko Amaker has served as an interim administrative judge for criminal matters in the Bronx for the last six months after Justice Julio Rodriguez III was elevated to the Appellate Division, First Department. In his new role, Yearwood will be charged with overseeing the day-to-day operations of the court.

“Judge Yearwood is an experienced judge whose leadership abilities, combined with his extensive knowledge of the law, sound judgment and deep commitment to the fair administration of justice, make him ideally suited to take on the multiple demands of this critically important post,” Chief Administrative Judge Lawrence Marks said in a court system news release.
