New SEVP Guidance on CPT Eligibility
Student Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) sent a broadcast email to all Designated School Officials (DSOs) on August 12, 2026, restricting the definition of the term “integral” in current regulations to tighten guidance for authorizing Curricular Practical Training (CPT) for F-1 students. The message emphasized that CPT must be essential to degree completion as it must be an integral part of an established curriculum and directly related to the student’s major. It cannot be authorized solely for employment purposes or for experiences not formally recognized as part of the academic program.
The ISSO team works closely with program directors at BU schools and colleges to ensure that all CPT authorized internship and practicums are integral to an established curriculum and that there is corresponding and concurrent academic registration noted on the student’s transcript.
