What are the Student Awards?
Each year Boston University Center for the Humanities gives awards ranging from $1,500 to $5,000 to distinguished undergraduate students. Starting with the March 2018 applications, Boston University Center for the Humanities will no longer accept self-nominations for student awards. Each eligible department is charged with nominating eligible students and ensuring that the nominees apply by the March 1 deadline. The awards are given out in a ceremony in May the week before graduation. These awards are in recognition of outstanding academic work. They are not given to student organizations to support projects.
When is the application deadline?
The annual Student Awards application deadline is March 1.
Who can apply?
Student applicants must be nominated by departments. Eligible departments nominate 2-4 sophomores and/or juniors annually for general awards in the humanities. Students who have won a general undergraduate award in a prior year are not eligible to be nominated for another. Students who have won an Oddy Award or Melville Latin Prize in prior years are eligible to be nominated for a general BUCH Undergraduate Student Award.
What if the deadline falls on a Saturday or Sunday?
In the event that March 1 falls on a Saturday or Sunday we expect that all applications will be submitted before 9 a.m. the following Monday morning. Please do not ask us to consider late applications. Please urge those writing your letters of recommendation them to upload the needed letters by the application deadline.
How do I use your online applications?
All BUCH applications must be submitted via InfoReady Review. You may save your draft application at anytime. You will need to use your BUID login name and Kerberos password to log in.
How should my referees submit their letters of recommendation?
Confidential letters must be submitted directly to the InfoReady Review portal by the recommender. Please follow the instructions in the Reference Letter section of the application to request letters of recommendation well in advance of the application deadline.
Are the Student Awards taxable income?
Student Awards are taxable income. Recipients are responsible for reporting the amount of their Award to the IRS. International students who receive Student Awards will be taxed on the Award in accordance with their home nation’s tax treaty with the United States.
