The Center

Established in 1980 through a matching grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the BU Center for the Humanities (BUCH or the Center) has developed a distinctive model for humanistic research, creative innovation, faculty support, and collaborative engagement in the humanities at BU. The Center’s history has placed it at the heart of BU’s work in the humanities.

The Center is now poised to further its original goals and build on the four decades of accomplishment and prestige that BUCH has brought to the University.

The 2022/2023 Expanded BUCH Charter will guide the Center in realizing the aspirations for BU humanities research articulated in the Arts & Sciences 2021 Humanities Task Force Report, securing the continued rise of BU as a global leader in innovative humanities-based scholarship, community engagement, and creative work.

BUCH is dedicated to maintaining its core mission of faculty support and enlarging the current programmatic scope through the creation of three new initiatives:

For more information about the Center’s past activities, our annual newsletters offer detailed retrospectives of each year’s programming.

Please go to our Contact page if you have questions or would like to be added to the list for the weekly bulletin of humanities events that we send out during fall and spring semesters.
