
Professor Emeritus; Art History & Archaeology; Etruscan & Roman Art
Professor Kleiner is the author of more than a hundred articles, reviews, and books, including The Arch of Nero in Rome (1985); A History of Roman Art (2nd ed. 2017); and the 10th (1995) through the 16th (2019) editions of Gardner’s Art through the Ages. Four of his books have been translated into Chinese, and in 2018, he was appointed Honorary Professor of Art History at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing.
Professor Kleiner was Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Archaeology from 1985 to 1998 and is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. He has served five terms as Chair of the Department of History of Art & Architecture (1981-1985, 2005-2014) and is one of the three founding members of BU’s Department of Archaeology. Professor Kleiner won Boston University’s Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2002 and has twice received the Distinguished Teaching Prize of the College of Arts & Sciences Honors Program. He has also won the College of Arts & Sciences Prize for Advising in the Humanities.
