Emily Nootbaar earned her BA in Art History with a minor in Anthropology from James Madison University, graduating with Phi Beta Kappa honors in 2022. For her thesis, she examined the figural representations, societal function, and latent inequities of the Lewis, Clark, and Sacajawea monument in her hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia. Since her graduation, Emily has held curatorial internships at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, where she began studying fine and folk art from a material culture perspective.
At BU, Emily plans to combine her research interests by focusing on the art, material culture, and built environment of nineteenth- and twentieth-century America. Additionally, she is excited to serve as a Graduate Assistant at the BU Art Galleries.
Outside of her studies, Emily loves to hike, try new foods, and spend time with her dog, Georgia, whom she named after Georgia O’Keeffe.
