A suitable internship at a non-profit museum or civic institution can be taken as a course for credit as CAS AH 501 (Fall / Summer 1) or CAS AH 502 (Spring / Summer 2) so long as it is approved in advance by the Director of Museum Studies (DMS).
Note: Undergraduate internships may also be held in commercial galleries.

For an internship to count for credit there are a number of conditions that must be met:

  • An employee at the host institution must agree to act as supervisor/mentor.
  • There must be a proper project to work on with aims and expectations that can be assessed by a supervisor/mentor.
  • The student and the supervisor must complete our departmental internship approval form describing the details of the internship.
  • The internship must be approved by the Director of Museum Studies prior to the start of the internship.
  • The internship should last for approximately 150 hours over a 15-week semester.
  • At the end of the internship, the internship supervisor/mentor must be prepared to write a brief report and give the student a grade (based on our grading criteria that the DMS will supply.)
  • The student must submit a 6-8 page report at the end of the internship to the Director of Museum Studies . This report will be graded by the DMS, and these two grades will form the overall course grade.
