Brown / Weiss Award Recipients Announced!
We are delighted to announce the recipients of the new Brown / Weiss Award to support the off-campus student experience. First offered in Spring/Summer 2021, the award provides financial support for History of Art & Architecture students (majors and minors) engaged in museum internships, or conducting research for an honors thesis.
Fall 2021 Recipients:
Shelby Barthelmy gained an award for her internship in the Photography Department at the MFA, Boston, under the supervision of Senior Curator, Kristen Gresh. Shelby assisted with the planning and preparation for an upcoming exhibition, LIFE Magazine: The Power and Truth in Photography. Spring/Summer 2021 Recipients:
Cecelia Dixon received an award for her internship at the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum. As the Interpretation Intern, Cecelia worked with her supervisor on developing educational materials for an upcoming show featuring the work of Jeffrey Gibson, Infinite, Indigenous, Queer Love. Gibson’s work pays homage to his own Mississippi Choctaw tribe, and to LGBTQ+ culture. As an exciting addition to her internship, Cecelia was enlisted to help with the assembly and installation of the exhibition. Along with her interest in the history of art and architecture, Cecelia has an active interest in graphic and web design, particularly for contemporary arts. She is now pursuing graduate work in computer science for media arts.

Erin Sutton-Beals‘ award helped to support her work as a guide at the Gibson House Museum, on Beacon Street, Boston, also during Summer 2021. Erin conducted regular and specialty tours of the house, highlighting the lives not only of the owners of the house but also its servants. Additionally, she gained experience in a new specialty tour that highlights the use of the house for the 2019 film adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, which took place, in part, at the Gibson House. Erin, now in her junior year, continues to act as a tour guide at the house and is adding new specialty tours to her repertoire, in addition to assisting with promotional events at the Museum. She hopes to work in museums. She is shown here in the Gibson House Museum dining room with a portrait of John Gibson.

Janet Bromley was the College intern for Summer 2021 in the Development and Guest Relations departments at MOSH – the Museum of Science and History – in Jacksonville, Florida. As MOSH is a small museum, Janet had the opportunity to work in several areas. She acted as an exhibit guide for the museum’s local history gallery, helped to plan events around an upcoming exhibition, Da Vinci: Machines and Robotics, and worked to recruit new members. Also, Janet assisted with grant writing. Having received a Brown/Weiss Award to support her internship, she is keen to return to MOSH in Summer 2022 to assist in finding grants to support other interns. Janet found the experience so rewarding that she says she will “definitely consider development jobs in museums for future employment” when she graduates this year.
