Professor Moore to participate in Virtual Book Talk

Professor William D. Moore

On October 1, 2020 at 5:30pm, Professor William D. Moore will participate in Hancock Shaker Village’s Book Talk: Shaker Fever.

From the HSV news announcement:
“Join Hancock Shaker Village for a virtual book talk with William D. Moore, author of Shaker Fever: America’s Twentieth-Century Fascination with a Communitarian Sect. (available now in hardcover)

Designers, artists, and collectors remain influenced by Shaker material culture today, but Americans were particularly enthralled by the Shakers from about 1925 to 1965. They bought Shaker furniture, saw Shaker worship services enacted on Broadway, sang Shaker songs, dressed in Shaker-inspired garb, collected Shaker artifacts, and restored Shaker villages. William D. Moore dives into a fascinating discussion of the scholars, composers, collectors, folklorists, photographers, writers, choreographers, and museum staff who drove the national interest in this dwindling religious group.

Shaker Fever places the activities of Doris Humphrey, Charles Sheeler, Laura Bragg, Juliana Force, and Edward Deming Andrews within the larger contexts of nationalism, modernism, and cultural resource management. Introducing previously unexamined scholarly studies of the Shaker faith, material culture and visual arts, stage performances, and museum exhibitions, Shaker Fever offers a fresh look at this religious group and its place within American memory. It is sure to delight enthusiasts, public historians, museum professionals, furniture collectors, and anyone interested in the dynamics of cultural appropriation and stewardship.”

This event is free and open to the public with advance registration here.
