Travel Grants

  • The GSO offers grants to GRS doctoral students who plan to present at a conference and conduct research outside of Boston.
  • Applications must be emailed as a Word document to the GSO at gsogrant@bu.edu

Call for Submissions

  • The editors of SEQUITUR, a graduate student journal published by the Department of History of Art & Architecture at Boston University, invite current and recent graduate students to submit content on the theme of “Aftershock” for our Fall 2021 issue.
  • We invite full submissions in: Featured essays & Visual and creative essays
  • We invite proposals in: Exhibition reviews, Book or exhibition catalogue reviews, interviews, research spotlights

WISEguys Social | Beyond Bystanders Workshop

Date & Time: October, 13th 4:30pm-6:30pm | October 18th, 12:00-1:30pm

  • We’re having a social! Join us in person, bring your friends, and maybe make some new ones. We’ll have burritos from El Pelón a variety of beverages. We’ll also showcase the new Beyond Bystanders program and other WISEguys initiatives. See you there!
  • Sexual harassment is a huge problem in academic STEM, and at BU. Upwards of 50% of women experience it, from undergraduate students to tenured faculty, with rates often increasing at higher levels of attainment.
  • Male graduate students frequently commit gender harassment, and thus have a role in preventing it.
  • To help male graduate students fill this role, we have developed a peer-led workshop series, Beyond Bystanders, that provides the skills to identify, interrupt, and prevent gender harassment.

Koru Mindfulness
Date & Time: Tuesdays 5-6pm, Oct 12,19
Location: Newbury Center, 755 Commonwealth Av Suite B18. Register

  • Four week series to teach the skill of mindfulness
  • Open to first generation undergraduates, graduates, and professional students.
  • Dinner will be provided but you must register in advance

Mental Health Fair
Date & Time: October 13th, 12-4pm
Location: Marsh Chapel Plaza

  • Featuring BU departments, student groups, local and national mental health organizations
  • Wellness kits, informational resources, emotional support animals and food will be available

Shred + Recycle Event

Date & Time: October 12, 13, 14th, 10am-1pm

Location: On-campus locations, look here – Shred&RecycleEvent

  • BU Information Security, in partnership with BU Sustainability, is offering three on campus opportunities for faculty, staff and students to dispose of paperwork & hard drives safely & securely
  • You can also recycle: batteries, lightbulbs, toner, cords and electronics. There is no limit to the amount you can shred and recycle. Clear out your home, space or office! 

Urban Inequalities Workshop

  • We will be hosting Dr. Devin Michelle Bunten, the Edward H. and Joyce Linde Assistant Professor of Urban Economics and Housing at MIT.
  • She will be presenting her work-in-progress titled: “Gentrification: New Theory, Measurement, and Empirics.”

Social Entrepreneurship Workshop Series

  • Are you thinking about starting a nonprofit or for-profit social impact venture? Is working for one of these types of organizations a potential career pathway?
  • Join Innovate@BU on for a panel discussion and workshop with three Boston-area founders!
  • Attendees will learn about these founders’ journeys, recommendations for launching an organization, and advice on working for one dedicated to impact.

Different Worlds, Different Bodies and Disabled Fantastica: The Disabled Body in Literature

  • Join writer Amanda Leduc on a part-history adventure, part-brainstorming discussion, all-round fabulous lecture on how to increase disability representation in your work in ways that center and respect the disabled experience and speak to the work of imagining new futures for us all.

A Letter-Writing Campaign to Incarcerated Survivors

Date & Time: Oct 18, 6:30-7:30 pm

Location: 930 Commonwealth Avenue, Floor 1 – Register

  • On the third Monday of every month SARP will be hosting a letter-writing activity to incarcerated survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
  • Each activity will feature a brief discussion and reminder of why we support incarcerated survivors, an opportunity to write your letter, and learn about additional options for taking action.
  • This letter-writing action program is an opportunity to write letters to incarcerated survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault with SARP ambassadors and other BU students and to discuss issues related to interpersonal violence as they effect incarcerated survivors. 

PDPA Events

Project Management: Tools and Tricks

Wednesday, October 13, 4-5 PM EST

This series of workshops will provide participants with skills to manage their time, large projects, and stressors during and throughout the doctoral experience. The interactive workshops will introduce learners to strategies and tools that they will be able to apply to their professional lives well past the PhD. In the Project Management: Tools and Tricks Workshop participants will be introduced to several project management tools and softwares, learn some tricks for streamlining their project management techniques, and will have the ability to test out tools for their own projects.  Register

PhD Progression: Career Development Learning Community

Friday, October 15, 12-1:30PM EST

Students in GRS and AAU Departments are invited to enroll in the Career Development Pathway on the PhD Progression Platform in order to participate in our fall Learning Community. We will have 4 sessions that align with the Career Development Pathway. As these occur at 12:00 noon, feel free to treat these as informal “brown bag,” lunch sessions. Register

Building Resilience

Wednesday, October 20, 12:30-2 PM

For everyone, especially during a global time of uncertainty, it can be difficult to manage responsibilities across our professional and personal lives. Navigating these challenges effectively and building resilience are critical for our mental health and productivity. This interactive workshop will describe the characteristics of what it takes to be resilient and identify strategies to recover from stress. Participants will explore evidence-based strategies, including drafting a resilience action plan, and learn how to apply these effectively to their individual objectives. Register

 Learning to Communicate Your Research/Work to Various Audiences

Monday, October 25, 12:30-1:30 PM

This workshop, led by Dr. Jovana Milosavljevic Ardeljan, will equip participants with strategies to clearly and effectively present their research/work to wide range of audiences. In the workshop, you will learn how to: Understand the role of communication in making a broader impact.
· Develop a mindset that will help you translate your work to different audiences
· Identify stakeholders and their expectations
· Develop a plan of action for articulating the value of your work
· Explain what you do and why it matters

How to Use Social Media to Promote Your Expertise and Engage Target Audiences

Wednesday, October 27, 3-4 PM 

Are you looking to engage with target research funders, collaborators, academic journals, media reporters and publications and/or the general public? Dr. Matthew Partridge – biochemist who has spent 16 years working in both industrial and academic research, and 10 of those years tweeting and posting about it on social media – will lead a remote workshop to help you achieve your thought leadership reach and visibility goals. Pulling from his experience at both Real Scientists and ErrantScience, Dr. Partridge will share helpful tips and tactics for faculty members at every comfort level and presence on social media. This workshop will cover the value and impact of different social media platforms, how to effectively communicate your work, how to engage with target audiences, how to develop and refine your strategy, and measure success. Register
