This is our 10th year celebrating International Education Week (IEW), which will take place from November 15-19 2021. IEW is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange. In July 2021 the Biden administration renewed the U.S commitment to International Education and we encourage all departments, cultural centers, student organizations, schools/colleges, and groups to submit their own event(s) for IEW to highlight BU’s commitment to International Education.
Lastly, let’s make it social! If you are posting and sharing content on social media, please use the IEW 2021 hashtag: #BUIEW2021

9 AM to 10 AM | Environmental Risks and Power Plant Suspension
Energy investment is crucial to accelerating a global sustainable energy transition. Nevertheless, not all investments are successful. From her research of Chinese overseas investments in the power sector over the past two decades, Yangsiyu Lu identifies rates of power plant suspensions and where suspension rates are highest. Given the significant impacts of energy investments on the environment, Lu and her research team also explore whether environmental issues are associated with project suspensions and the locations of coal power projects and related air pollutants relative to local populations.

On Wednesday, November 17, join Yangsiyu Lu, a Research Fellow at the Global Development Policy Center, for a discussion on the research findings and why investors must consider environmental issues in their decision-making. 10 AM to 10:50 AM | Extrapolating the Research Timeline of HCI: Cyber Meets Physical
Guest Speaker: Dr. Max Mühlhäuser, Professor, University of Darmstadt
Moderated by Dr. Reza Rawassizadeh, Assistant Professor of Computer Science
Abstract: We witness the era of digital transformation: ever more areas of our business and everyday lives are pervaded by information and communication technologies. However, the majority of *interactions* between humans and this “new digital world” still happens through traditional computer-based means. This implies interaction via screens, which by their very nature *separate* the physical world—and thus people—from the digital world.
In order to overcome this barrier, two ‘movements’ must be pursued in HCI research and development: in one direction, the digital world and corresponding interaction must become tightly integrated with the physical world and with the way we perceive and interact with it; in the other direction, physical objects must become ‘naturally’ digitally interactive in the sense of Human Cyber-Physical Interaction (“HCI” revisited).
The talk will first explain the interaction obstacle mentioned in the first paragraph from a historic perspective of HCI. Thereafter, the two required grand directions of HCI R&D will be discussed. A number of recent research advancements will be mentioned as examples, and showcased via video. The talk will end with a (not so serious) sneak preview into the newest interaction modality.
Speaker Bio: Max Mühlhäuser is a full professor at Technical University of Darmstadt and head of the Telecooperation Lab. He holds key positions in several large collaborative research centers and is leading the Doctoral School on Privacy and Trust for Mobile Users. He and his lab members conduct research on Human Computer Interaction, the future Internet, Intelligent Systems, and Cybersecurity including Privacy & Trust. Max founded and managed industrial research centers, and worked as either professor or visiting professor at universities in Germany, the US, Canada, Australia, France, and Austria. He is a member of acatech, the German Academy of the Technical Sciences. He was and is active in numerous conference program committees, as organizer of several annual conferences, and as a member of editorial boards or a Guest Editor for journals such as ACM IMWUT, ACM ToIT, Pervasive Computing, ACM Multimedia, and Pervasive and Mobile Computing.
This talk is part of the Computer Science Research Seminar Series presented by The MET Department of Computer Science. Attendees may register for the event to receive access to the zoom link.

12 PM to 1 PM | Tai Chi at Marsh Chapel
In-Person & Virtual Offering to the BU Community. Participants must complete a waiver in order to attend and receive the Zoom link. (See More Info Link.) About the Tai Chi: With roots in the Chinese martial arts going back at least two centuries, Tai Chi is typically practiced today as a system of fluid, low-impact movements for the benefit of health and wellness. Tai chi can be viewed as a form of active meditation (or `meditation in motion’), whereby the mind/body connection is developed and used to coordinate movements through mental awareness. This type of practice, in turn, has been associated with a variety of benefits, including relief of stress, better balance, and improvement in concentration, coordination, and circulation. While all movements are practiced in a gentle and relaxed manner, tai chi in its advanced stages of training even becomes – perhaps contrary to appearances! – an effective martial art. In this class we will focus on the Wu style of tai chi, a traditional form of tai chi going back five generations, characterized by smaller, more compact movements than other styles. Originally intended to facilitate short-range body contact when applied as a martial art, this `closed-frame’ character of Wu-style tai chi renders the associated health benefits particularly accessible to practitioners of all ages. Instruction will focus on the 37-movement Wu short form.

3 PM to 5 PM | Be Moved
"The goal is to invite participants to explore creative and interdisciplinary thinking (which we approach as ""an activity that involves multiple intelligences– bodily-kinesthetic, intrapersonal, interpersonal, musical-rhythmic, visual-spatial, logical-mathematical, verbal-linguistic, and naturalistic thinking""). The all-encompassing activity chosen here is using movement as a language.
We offer ""Be Moved"", a group class and safe space that guides you to articulate your thoughts/emotions/state-of-being in free-flow movement. The session/instructor will focus on visualization experiments, abstract thinking, non-verbal communication, and self-awareness. One need not enter with any prior experience with movement arts or any particular physical ability– the session molds to whatever kind of movement feels satisfying and comfortable to each person."

11 AM to 12:30 PM | The Lines We Draw: Virtual Symposium on US and EU Border Regimes
"What is a national border? An imagined, shifting line, a militarized zone, an invitation to pass, or a demand to stay put? Across the Mexico-US border, asylum seekers wait in informal refugee camps that fall outside the jurisdiction of either states or the UNHCR.
In parallel, people crossing the EU’s external borders in Western Balkan countries are moving across different spaces while also being confined, detained, pushed-back, and irregularized through various legal or semi-legal practices - thus challenging existing borders and violent practices by their movement.
To address some of the questions and concerns related to the EU and US border regimes and their effects, the Initiative on Forced Displacement (IFD) at BU, launched a collaborative, interdisciplinary research project. Working closely with colleagues from the Western Balkans and Mexico, we hope to demystify US-Mexico and EU-Western Balkans border regimes and their impact on individuals and communities.
Join us on Thursday, November 18th as three authors from our collective volume, The Lines we Draw, delve into their unique chapters. Each author's presentation will consist of a short overview of their work, an interview highlighting some of the chapter's key points, and a period for Q&A.
IFD will also be hosting a second session with three additional authors on Friday the 19th, as well as an open conversation for potential contributors on Saturday the 20th."
