This autumn we are excited to be working across BU to support international education, cross-cultural understanding, global research, the health and wellbeing of those abroad – and more. We are especially energized following President Gilliam’s historic inauguration and her reflections on the importance of living in communities that are “diverse, multicultural and global” – something she notes as influential in her decision to come lead BU. We are proud to welcome people from all over the world as part of our diverse global community – one that we will celebrate during BU’s 13th Annual International Education Week (IEW) starting Nov. 11. We hope to see you at the many events hosted across the University as a part of the joint initiative of the U.S. Departments of State and Education to foster the benefits of international exchange and education. We are equally excited by the many BU students studying away from campus this fall in meaningful experiential learning opportunities all around the globe and for the anticipated large numbers of students already planning now to go abroad in the spring. In addition to highlighting IEW in this issue below, we spotlight partnerships overseas with Student Wellbeing and student successes in Venice, Geneva, and Padua. We also share the inspiring story of a SPH graduate student and doctor, originally from Nepal, turned social health-tech entrepreneur and Fulbright Fellow who aims to transform pharmacies across South Asian countries. Additionally, we feature a mother-daughter duo who studied at CELOP, 22 years apart. Global diversity is a defining characteristic of BU and an important attribute that we strive to champion every day. The University’s commitment to our global community and our collective ability to harness our already strong global foundation will no doubt lead BU to even greater heights. We are thrilled about the future. We hope you enjoy this issue of Global Matters. Sincerely, Willis G. Wang Vice President and Associate Provost for Global Programs |
