7 PM to 8:30 PM | Belonging in Chinatown, and Beyond: Community and Identity in Action
For many at BU, Chinatown is a weekend destination for dim sum or celebratory dinners out. But Chinatown is a complex community in the city of Boston, with its own residents, long history, and current social issues. How does “belonging” manifest itself in the Chinatown neighborhood? What is special about it as a community, and why?
Join CAS WR 111 students—who this semester have studied the Hub unit of “the individual in community,” visited Chinatown, and explored the neighborhood’s vibrant art, culture, and history—as they host a panel representing Chinatown non-profits, residents, and other community stakeholders. The conversation may cover race and identity in Boston, post-pandemic economic recovery, issues of pollution and environmental justice, and art as a vehicle for cross-cultural and intergenerational connections.
Everyone is welcome to join WR 111 students, instructors, and invited guests at the panel; please register in advance. After registering, you will receive the Zoom link by email to join the meeting.

6 PM to 7 PM | Defense and Disinformation, Perspectives on Current Affairs from the Delegation of the European Union to the United States
The Delegation of the European Union to the United States in Washington, DC represents the EU in the US, working in coordination with the diplomatic and consular missions of all the EU Member States. Join the Delegation for this special event, hosted in partnership with Boston University's Washington DC Program. Hear from the Delegation's Military Attache, Brigadier General Fritz Urbach, and Political Counselor, Santiago Robles Monsalve, on the current state of global defense and tackling the disinformation that challenges international peace.
The global security environment is becoming more contested, complex, and interconnected. As armed conflicts and civil wars re-emerge, new and unconventional security threats have grown stronger, including cyber-attacks, environmental terrorism, artificial intelligence, and disinformation. In an increasingly interconnected world, Europe’s security starts abroad, with strong allies like the United States and other non-EU states. The EU, more than ever, works closely with partners to face these global challenges and build together a safer, greener, more prosperous and equal world.
This is a hybrid event, offered both in-person (Washington, DC) and virtually. Location of live stream to be announced.

Happening Before & After IEW
November 10
6 PM to 8 PM | Equatorial Guinea in Spain and Spain in Equatorial Guinea
This event takes place in Madrid, Spain.
Equatorial Guinea was a Spanish territory between 1926 and 1968. This brought many changes such as the widespread implementation of the Spanish language and the exploitation of natural resources by Spanish corporations. In fact, Equatorial Guinea was fundamental to Spain’s last stage as a colonial power. However, after its independence in October of 1968, this former colony was practically erased from collective memory. Many young Spaniards today do not know that Spain once had control over this territory or that Spanish continues to be spoken in an African country. Why the silence after centuries of contact?
Today, the Equatoguinean community in Spain plays an important socioeconomic, cultural and political role. This community also seeks to establish its identity as a people that have had a prolonged relationship with Spain and wishes to carve out space as a protagonist in the current social and cultural arena.
