Identity and Culture in Korean Headwear

Headgear was once regarded as so indispensable to daily life that Korea was once renowned as the “Land of Hats.” Visible markers of social status, occupation, and gender during the Joseon dynasty (1392–1910), Korean hats were statements of cultural values and personal identity as well as reflections of broader systems of etiquette and aesthetics. This lecture traces the rich history of Korea’s once vibrant hat culture. Drawing on examples from textiles, paintings, and photography, Jinyoung Anna Jin explores how hats were used to embody Korean identity, masculinity, and cultural heritage and discusses how these objects continue to shape the perception of Korean culture on the global stage.
