A look into BU Synchronized Skating

Winter is almost here. Brrrr. We thought it would be appropriate to celebrate one of our favorite winter sports – ice skating – with a few thoughts from Taylor Dean, member of the BU Figure Skating Club……

I don’t know where I would be without skating in my life. It has given me so much—important skills, a healthy lifestyle, and strong friendships. Though skating has always held a special place in my heart, I didn’t realize how my love for the sport would change after high school.

College puts a lot of pressure on students, and we all need an escape every so often. When I step on the ice at Walter Brown, all my worries about homework and tests wash away. For that hour and a half, all I have to worry about is enjoying myself on the ice.

Skating in the collegiate world is competitive, but not as intense. Skaters from different schools come together and forge friendships because we’re all there for the same reason—to continue our love for skating. Every one just wants to have fun and share their passion for skating with each other.

As an individual skater, I never completely learned the value of teamwork. At school, even though I still skate individually, I’m a part of a team that supports and loves each other. These people taught me how teamwork creates the best results, and they make the sport something more than just a sport.

Skating is more than just a sport or a hobby. It creates an escape from school and everyday stresses. It gives me a group of amazing people that I can always turn to in tough times, but most of all, it gives me something to pour my heart into.

Come see skaters of the BU Figure Skating Club perform “Broadway On Ice” with BU Synchronized Skating, BU Club Hockey, and BU Off Broadway on Sat., Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. at Walter Brown Arena. Tickets are available on EventBrite or at the door.
