October 2023 Student Employees of the Month

Congratulations to these outstanding student employees who contribute to the success of PERD programs and services!

If you see these students on campus, be sure to congratulate them!

Aquatics – Virginia Popov

Virginia has been a wonderful addition to our staff, working as a coach/instructor/guard for us since 2020. Virginia always goes the extra mile, and brings an energy and enthusiasm for her job that is genuinely infectious. She is always willing to help out when she can and is a positive influence on the rest of the aquatics staff. Virginia also takes her jobs very seriously: on Wednesday, October 25 she performed heroically during a surface rescue that aided a BU student. Thanks to Virginia and the on-duty lifeguard/instructor team, the student was safely back in their dorm room that same evening. We value Virginia and graciously nominate her as our October employee of the month!

EMS – Nguyen (Andy) Nguyen

Andy has shown excellent work ethic and professionalism. He consistently goes above and beyond to help BUEMS whenever there is a shift that needs to be filled.

Facilities – Sofia Martinez

As new student staffer, Sofia was thrown into the deep end by being assigned to work both front desk and WBA. However, she quickly proved that she was more than capable by asking the tough questions to strengthen her knowledge of both places. She has also picked up shifts in the Pro Shop right away and continues to improve her building knowledge through all of these FAC positions. Thank you for your dedication to the team, Sofia! We appreciate you!

Fitness – Merilyn Amponsah-Asamoah

Merilyn is a valuable member of the Fitness Attendant team and consistently demonstrates positivity when out on the fitness floor. Merilyn is always happy to help the team and goes above and beyond job expectations. Additionally, Merilyn communicates well with the office, coworkers, and members to provide a positive FitRec experience. We are fortunate to have Merilyn on our team and look forward to continuing to work alongside them!

Intramurals – Phillip Kim

Since being promoted to supervisor, Phillip has consistently been a stabilizing force for the BUIM program. His knowledge of basketball, combined with his responsibility and willingness to both coach and be coached, has helped him continue his growth. His presence has become vital to the success of BUIM.

Outdoor Programs – Nanea Kay

A leader with the Outdoor Trip program, Nanea does fantastic work on each trip she leads in terms of knowledge, technical skills, and outdoor leadership. Her work is consistently praised by trip participants, and her coworkers always benefit from her guidance and advocacy for responsible safety management. We are grateful for Nanea’s exceptional leadership and extend our sincere congratulations. Well done!

PERD Administration – Anmar Abdi

Anmar is very knowledgeable and readily available to assist our professional staff in every way. He takes the initiative on daily tasks, and is flexible and accommodating when helping fill empty shifts. Anmar is a someone who has a positive influence and impact on his peers, coworkers, and professional staff, who also speak very highly of him. He deserves this recognition for his work not just in the past few weeks, but for all that he’s accomplished last summer with PERD!

Pro Shop – Alex Zhang

Alex is one of the most engaged and personable Pro Shop staff when it comes to helping patrons. He is always ready and willing to help with a task or aid a patron, but he is also an intentional team player. Alex strives to know everyone on our large staff, and he strives to know them well. Alex has the unique ability to talk with coworkers about anything – chat with him for five minutes and he’ll be asking for your opinion on equipment so he can check out your favorite hobby or pastime. Thank you for all your hard work and ability to make everyone feel included, Alex!
