Getting to Know FitRec Staff: Micki Taylor Pinney
“We need to re-define how we look at dance. It’s not just about beautiful able bodied dancers… it’s about movement.”
Micki Taylor-Pinney is currently Boston University’s Director of Dance and has been with the University for over 30 years. Micki is responsible for the credit dance program, non-credit dance program, children’s programs, and dance minors and serves as the faculty advisor for programming of Reach, the summer dance camp.
As the child of two international folk dance instructors for Micki Taylor-Pinney dance has always been a part of her life. However, despite dance being such an integral part of her upbringing, it wasn’t until she took her first modern dance class in college when she realized she wanted to pursue dance as a career. She describes this career-transforming class as the “perfect marriage of body, mind, and spirit”. After getting her bachelors from UMass Amherst and her MFA from University of North Carolina, Greensboro, Micki took on a position here at Boston University.
Micki’s love for dance is not limited to the Boston University community, but the greater Boston area as a whole. Her nonprofit, Mass Movement, is “dedicated towards providing movement arts education programs for people of all ages.” Micki is a strong believer in the power of dance and several of her projects with Mass Movement sought to find ways for dance to be a part of the lives of those with physical disabilities and other health issues.
