It’s been a beautiful fall so far. What better way to enjoy the season, move your body and take advantage of our gorgeous region than a hike!
We’ve compiled a short (could never be wholly inclusive) list of a few of our favorite places to hike in New England. Make one a destination this weekend!
Monument Mountain Great Barrington, MA
Ascend this popular peak to witness the breathtaking views of the southern Berkshires and the Housatonic River Valley. Enjoy the landscape that once drew 19th century literary greats. Be on the lookout for the cave where a conversation between Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville inspired ideas for Moby Dick.
Mount Greylock Lanesborough, MA
Visit the highest peak in Massachusetts at 3, 491 feet. With over 70 miles of designated trails for hiking, mountain biking, and back-country skiing, this state reservations has multiple opportunities for nature lovers and hikers alike.
Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary Topsfield, MA
Bring the family for a fun nature hike through 12 miles of interconnecting trails, forests, meadows, and wetlands. Kids can sightsee through the observation tower or explore the “rockery” of caves.
Blue Hills Reservation Milton, MA
Looking to stay close to the city? Explore Blue Hills Reservation located just outside of Boston where visitors can lookout over the entire metropolitan area. The reservation is home to diverse flora and fauna including dogwoods, lady’s slippers, and dragonflies.
Lynn Woods Reservation Lynn, MA
After a day of hiking, stop by the three active reservoirs for scenery amongst the forestland. Don’t miss Dungeon Rock, an underground tunnel with a history of pirate folklore and treasure hunts.
Purgatory Chasm State Reservation Sutton, MA
Running for a quarter of a mile between 70 foot granite walls, Purgatory Chasm is a unique natural site. These granite walls are believed to have been the result of an unexpected release of glacial meltwater near the end of the most recent Ice Age. In addition to this fascinating natural phenomena, kids can also enjoy the playground and merry-go-round located by the visitor center.
