Ahmet Yükleyen

Ahmet Yükleyen’s work examines why and how Muslim immigrants in Europe have been mobilized into radical and moderate Islamic groups. He argues that socioeconomic factors alone do not explain the popularity of radicalism over other available options, including secularism, “official Islam,” and Sufism. Yükleyen hypothesizes that non-governmental and transnational Islamic organizations play a decisive role in this process because of their position as intermediaries between the needs of Muslims on the one hand and government polices on immigrants and minorities on the other. The center of his analysis is a comparison of three major Turkish-Islamic organizations in Germany and the Netherlands and the ways in which they craft messages for their respective audiences.
