Giving Day 2021

Message from Director Daniela Caruso

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

As you probably know, Wednesday, April 7, 2021, is “Giving Day” at BU. I hope you join me in making a donation to the Center for the Study of Europe on this day.

The Center for the Study of Europe at Boston University provides institutional support for European studies across Boston University. The Center brings together faculty, students, international visitors, and others with interests in Europe across a variety of disciplines and coordinates the BA and minor in European Studies.

The mission of the Center for the Study of Europe is to promote a critical understanding of Europe through its complex heritage, which owes its richness to countless contributions from other regions of the world. We explore Europe’s legal, political, economic, and religious histories; its art, literature, music, and philosophy; its experimentation with new forms of governance, such as the ones developed by the European Union; its complicity in the production of global injustice; and its many redeeming possibilities. In an increasingly multipolar world, we believe Europe can only be understood in relation to other sites of socio-cultural production, political engagement, and economic transformation. We therefore collaborate regularly with the other Centers of the Pardee School as well as with its Institute for Global Development Policy.

Each year the Center offers a rich program of activities ranging from public lectures and panel discussions, international symposia and conferences, film screenings and concerts, to seminars, round-tables, and (when possible) lunch talks. Participants have included well-known scholars, politicians, policy experts, and journalists as well as artists, poets, activists, and public intellectuals. We work closely with other centers, departments, and schools here at BU; with local universities and cultural organizations; with European Consulates and Embassies; and with publishers of literature in translation, among others. Operationally, the Center provides a focal point and institutional support for the study of Europe across Boston University through coordination of teaching missions, support of research, community-building among faculty and students, and outreach beyond the University.

Our events and activities would not be possible without your ongoing input and participation. We realize you have multiple commitments to consider on Giving Day, but even small contributions are important to our efforts to build a European Studies community at BU. In the end, the most important thing for us as a community is to feel excited about what we are doing and why we are doing it.  That has a lot more to do with participation, and with the time and commitment that we put into being a part of the community than it does with the actual dollar figure that is raised on one particular day. We are grateful for any contribution you can make.
