Learn More About Student Networks

Purpose

The primary purpose of these groups is to help students connect with others who share social identities, such as race, gender, class, or ability. Students will have a chance to learn about their identity development and explore identities that they may not have considered before. They will also have a chance to socialize and learn with the other affinity groups via scheduled educational and social programming.

Roles and Responsibilities

Advisor

  • Katy Collins will function as an advisor to each group. She will meet with the groups, assist them with the logistics of virtual gatherings, support their initiatives, and provide both educational programming as well as regular opportunities for social gatherings.
  • As a queer, white cis woman who does not share all of these affinities, Katy will work with these groups to connect them with other staff and faculty who may also serve as an advisor to the group.

Additional Roles:

  • As these networks develop, Katy and other advisors will work with them to assist students if they would like to develop some structure within their group, like a cabinet, senior leadership, etc.

    3. What type of programming will occur?
      1. Social and educational. Social programming can include meet-n-greets, dances, trivia, or celebrations of your accomplishments. Educational programming could cover individual and group identity development, social identity specifics (critical race theory, queer theories, etc.), leadership skills, and outside speakers.
    4. Can I create my own programming?
      1. Absolutely. Katy can assist with logistics and funding if students like, but students are welcome to create their own community events.
    5. How can a group request funding?
      1. Fill out this Google Form
    6. Why should I join this program? What can I get from this program?
      1. Joining a student network can help build and bolster a student’s sense of belonging. These spaces provide students with an opportunity to explore and  understand their own identities in a particular place and time as well as the identities that others hold. Since one’s notion of self can fluctuate over time, we will regularly offer these spaces so that students know that there is a space for them at any time on their journey.
    7. If I join a network do I have to attend every meeting or program?
      1. No. These spaces are for students to utilize as they see fit.
    8. Does anyone determine which group I join?
      1. No. Students self-select into these groups.
    9. Can I join more than one network?
      1. Yes. One space could not capture all of the identities that one holds so students may join as many spaces as they like.
    10. Do I need to join a network to attend an event?
      1. No. Joining the group allows students to make connections that can be sustained outside of individual events, but students are more than welcome to attend any events that interest them even if they don’t join a group.
