Do good this Friday in honor of Devin Suau
Friday is Scarlet Fever Day at BU, a day where everyone is encouraged to wear their BU red throughout campus. But amongst the Terriers gear you will see up and down Commonwealth Avenue, you will also see students wearing green, a few Boston buildings being lit green and many people participating in acts of kindness on Friday. The green is for Boston’s Devin Suau Day.
Isabelle Tambascio (SED ’20) shares with us what the days means and how to commemorate it:
Devin Suau, a 6-year-old boy from Framingham, MA, recently lost his battle with the rare form of pediatric brain cancer called DIPG. Devin managed to touch the lives of tens of thousands of people without even meeting them and build an amazing army of people all around the country. The #whynotdevin movement was started to bring awareness for this form of pediatric cancer that, as of right now, has no cure. The strength of Devin, his mom, dad, and three brothers has inspired so many people to never give up.
Back in September, Mayor Marty Walsh named October 27th (Devin’s birthday) Devin Suau Day in the city of Boston. Devin’s favorite superhero was the Green Lantern, and the #whynotdevin movement uses green as its main color. Therefore, buildings will be lit green that day throughout Boston to remember Devin. To commemorate this day, we will “light up” BU green to honor Devin by wearing green shirts. We will show our never ending support for the Suau family as they mourn this loss.
Even if you don’t wear green this Friday, please consider doing a random act of kindness in honor of the family to spread the love that Devin always spread during his life. People all throughout New England will be showing how they are marking the day by using the hashtags #whynotdevin and #iseeyourlight on social media.
