Parent Blog: New Beginnings

As a parent, I find comfort in reflecting upon my daughter’s first fall semester. It’s nearing the end of the semester and my BU student is happy. I am reassured to know that she is at the school she longed to attend and it’s all working out for her. Academically she’s doing well. She is doing HER personal best as I have always encouraged her to do. She has made a handful of close friends as well as hands and toes of acquaintances. Although I did not ask, she interviewed for a job and conquered the position. She’s involved in her college as a Dean’s Host, participates in the Entrepreneurship Club, and is thriving in numerous ways.

I also know last year at this time was a different story. My daughter entered BU as a spring admit and it wasn’t an easy start. I am sure that there are other students who may not be having the “college are the best years” experience, which is why I share my daughter’s experiences—to reassure parents. It is upsetting to learn your child is not happy at the school. It would be even more unsettling to prepare to send them off after the winter break. The thought of returning to BU after embracing the comforts of home may feel unbearable for some students.

I want to reassure you that a rocky begin is okay. Do not fret as Boston University offers so much opportunity at the start of a new semester. Not only can it be an exciting time, it is also a time for new beginnings!

What can a BU student do if they are NOT FEELING SPRING SEMESTER?

– Focus on the accomplishments—and transitioning to college is an accomplishment!
– Focus on the good things that happened fall semester, there have to be some good times, even the smallest moments.
– What did you not have time to do that you wanted to do? Make a spring semester 2016 bucket list
– Participate in recruitment for a sorority or fraternity
– Join a club, there are numerous options and clubs are always looking for new members
– Basketball? Hockey? Support BU’s teams, watch some great games, and meet new people
– First snow get on the field for a snowball fight, you may just meet a new friend
– Apply for an internship or job
– Try something that you are curious about, a new hobby or interest
– Set goals for yourself no matter how small
– Enjoy the City of Boston – go ice skating on the Frog Pond, visit the MFA, check out Quincy Market or Faneuil Hall, and walk the Freedom Trail

BU will welcome students in the CGS January Boston-London Program and all spring admits. At the same time, current students will be welcomed back to their BU homes. A new semester is a perfect time for your student try new things at BU!

  1. Thank you for such touching words. I think my son has had some really positive experiences during his 1st semester but also faced some challenging times which he kept from us. We are looking forward to having him home and having some quality time to talk (not text!) and together pave a path for a more productive happier spring semester. Here’s to a happy new year for all BU students!

  2. Thank you for your kind comment! If your or your son need assistance after you have those discussions, feel free to reach out to either the Parents Program or Dean of Students office. Happy New Year!
