Student Spotlight: Jennifer Owens CAS/COM’15

Meet Jennifer Owens! Jennifer is now a graduate of CAS with a major in Psychology and COM with a Advertising minor in Film and TV. Jennifer is from Long Island, New York and initially came into BU undeclared. She spent her freshman year exploring different options. In her sophomore year she took her first psychology class and loved it so much she planned on focusing her studies toward clinical psychology until she found a passion to do something that helps people in a greater scale through her promotional and communication skills.

Living in Boston, Jennifer found that it is a unique opportunity to have study in a urban and strong community. It’s never so overwhelming that it’s terrifying, but there is always something new to try out and lots to do. In her time here Jennifer has stayed close friends with all the people she met since freshman year, especially her freshman floormates. Jennifer got involved in extracurriculars like Greek Life and Program Counsel through the Student Activities Office. She also worked on the FYSOP staff as a junior, proving that it’s never too late to try something new and different!

By the end of Jennifer’s four years here at BU, she has worked four on-campus jobs which helped shape her experience and also gave her a perspective of BU not only as a student but a functional view as a employee. In the Dean of Students Office, Jennifer worked as a Programs and Operation Assistant where she engaged in administrative work, served as a support to the Deans of the school, and helped in-coming and current students, parents, and alumni. She also worked as a Orientation Presentation Coordinator serving as a liaison among DOS, tech, and all the faculties presenters. The greatest thing about working in DOS for Jennifer has been the sense of a second family she gets from the tight knit staff. In this way, not only did she have a strong academic support system, but also a strong emotional support to celebrate all the little victories that lead up to her graduation while her family was far away.

Jennifer’s word of advice is that coming in undeclared at first doesn’t mean coming in with no direction. The most important thing she learned is to find ways to make BU smaller. That doesn’t mean losing any open mindedness or diversity but creating smaller niche populations that make you feel more at home and extracurriculars that make you fully enjoy all four years at BU!

Congratulations Jennifer!
