The Other America: MLK Day 2015
We will be commemorating our alumnus, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with a series of events on January 19, 2015 in the Metcalf Ballroom in the George Sherman Union and in the Boston community.
At 10am, the Community Service Center will be participating in a Day of Service at Madison Park High School, putting together kits for children transitioning out of homelessness and into new homes. Volunteers will be done at 1pm. Interested students can sign up via the Community Service Center.
At 2 p.m. the Dean of Students office and Howard Thurman Center will hold their annual commemoration of Dr. King with, The Other America: On the Occasion of the National Celebration of The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. featuring noted poet Nikki Giovanni. A special musical act will be joining us – stay tuned for details. We will also have student and alumni speakers. This event is open to the public.
At 7 p.m., Rhett Talks will kick off their spring semester with “The Problem of Poverty,” a look at a topic of focus for Dr. King, American poverty. Three Boston University faculty will provide quick, provocative talks based on that focus, including:
- Diana Swancutt, “Owning It: The Complicity of Christianity in U.S. Poverty”
- Keith Magee, “Strength to Love: Global Justice for the Poor”
- Deborah Belle, “Some Consequences of Poverty in our Wealthy Nation”
Rhett Talks will conclude with a reception in the Metcalf Small Ballroom. This event is open to the University community.
Have questions or need to arrange accommodations for either event? Please call the Boston University Dean of Students office at katcorn@bu.edu or 617-353-4126.
