A Marathon Safety Message from the Chief of Police, Thomas Robbins
On Monday morning April 21st, the 118th running of the Boston Marathon will kick off from Hopkinton. While this is an annual tradition, this year’s race is expected to draw a great deal more interest, with more spectators and runners taking part in the event. Because of the tragic events at last year’s race, security at the Marathon will be significantly increased. As a spectator, you should expect to see a significant presence of uniformed and plain clothes police officers along the entire marathon route. At various points along the course spectators will be required to pass through security checkpoints to access viewing areas. At these checkpoints, law enforcement or security officers will be inspecting bags and other items being carried. Spectators should not to carry any of the following items:
· Weapons of any kind
· Backpacks or similar over the shoulder bags
· Coolers
· Suitcases
· Fireworks, fuels or explosives
· Glass containers or cans
· Any containers capable of carrying more than 1 liter of liquid
· Handbags larger than 12”x12”x6”
· Large blankets / sleeping bags
· Any kind of mask or costume
· Props including sporting equipment or military gear
Marathon Day in Boston is always an exciting time of the year and an event which defines the Boston experience. I encourage you to enjoy the race and surrounding festivities, but I want to remind you that it is illegal to consume alcohol in any public place. Alcohol ordinances and drug laws will be strictly enforced by the police along the course.
On behalf of BUPD and all the public safety agencies supporting the Boston Marathon, I encourage everyone to participate in our “See Something, Say Something” campaign by being aware and attentive to your surroundings and to immediately report suspicious activities to the police. If you encounter a suspicious article, do not touch or move the article and quickly move away from the area. You can contact the police by dialing 9-1-1 or contact the BUPD directly by calling 617-353-2121.
Enjoy the Marathon and stay Safe!
