Time Out

Scott Eisen (COM) heard about April 2011’s devastating tornadoes that ripped through the South, and hopped on plane to document it.

In my life, it’s time for celebration. However . . .

The earthquakes, tornadoes, and floods have me thinking of loss. Appropriate remembrances for those lost. The culture and ways of life that may be lost. And, personally, being at a loss for what I should do.
I decided, amongst so many possibilities to take a time out. Time to better understand. Time to look out for someone other than myself. Time to help.

Any number of us – on campus – are aware and present for you. My staff and I can help with resources, if you need them. And, we know people – we’re loaded with info and can help you get to the right place or in front of the people you need. The good folk at Behavioral Medicine and Marsh Chapel can help you see and make sense of your sadness and suffering as well as the suffering of others.

Peace to those of you who will show your love to the folks in East Asia and the American South. Stay safe and strong if you spend your summer helping on site. Thanks to those of you who will shed tears, feed, clothe, heal, or help a few people we do not know with your resources and comfort.

Events like these make me question my achievements and my sense of comfort. At times, I also question how I make sense of my personal wholeness in relation to the world. I want to help. And, I recognize that what I can do may have limits. (In these times, Howard Thurman’s meditation, Give Me the Listening Ear, and Trane’s Naima give me comfort.)

Much love to you as you do your work and keep us moving forward. Much strength and peace to the folks who are suffering.

Peace.
