Conversation for Your Coffee & Love Playlist (With a Poetry Mix)
Pablo Neruda (From: http://www.sheisfrench.com/pablo-neruda/romance/)
You should have been there.
We talked of heartbreak, romance, slow jams, and slow dancing. We discussed lust and extending time as a gift and a demonstration. We gave props to Dr. Helen Fisher and were impressed by formulas and chemical reactions.
Mothers make us sigh, cry and smile – so do our brothers and sisters.
Folks spoke of truth, forces of nature, magic, and religion. You should’ve been there. It was fun, sad, exciting, and silly. We chatted about longing, poetry, and politics. We listened to stories of disappointment, dope-ness, and sweetness. We just talked about love.
And we agreed that Pablo Neruda might channel Cupid and that he continues to be a muse for Valentine-thinking. And, the fine Mr. Neruda even made an appearance:
If You Forget Me
I want you to know
one thing.
You know how this is:
if I look
at the crystal moon, at the red branch
of the slow autumn at my window,
if I touch
near the fire
the impalpable ash
or the wrinkled body of the log,
everything carries me to you,
as if everything that exists,
aromas, light, metals,
were little boats
that sail
toward those isles of yours that wait for me.
Well, now,
if little by little you stop loving me
I shall stop loving you little by little.
If suddenly
you forget me
do not look for me,
for I shall already have forgotten you.
If you think it long and mad,
the wind of banners
that passes through my life,
and you decide
to leave me at the shore
of the heart where I have roots,
remember
that on that day,
at that hour,
I shall lift my arms
and my roots will set off
to seek another land.
But
if each day,
each hour,
you feel that you are destined for me
with implacable sweetness,
if each day a flower
climbs up to your lips to seek me,
ah my love, ah my own,
in me all that fire is repeated,
in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten,
my love feeds on your love, beloved,
and as long as you live it will be in your arms
without leaving mine.

Another great poet sums up last Friday’s conversation:
So Enchanted With You
I like
Boiled turnips
Boiled potatoes
Boiled rutabagas
with butter
and sea salt
But not every day
I like
Fried Virginia flounder
Fried sand dabs
Fried smelts
But usually only on Friday nights
I want
Drop biscuits
Miniature Parker House rolls
Extra thin white bread
When I uncharacteristically
make a sandwich
I like
Garlic straight off the vine
Anchovies anytime
And good red wines
’cause I’m too old
to drink cheap
I like to pound and grill my veal
I rub my beef
In a special chili mixture
I really don’t eat
anyone else’s ground meat
In other words:
I’m Normal
So this is the question:
Why am I so enchanted
with you
