The New Way Forward – New Talk about Afghanistan

Can anybody win on Afghanistan? Last night, President O stepped up to the mic to drop a few lines about how he plans to get my back over the next few years; my responsibility to the world; and, why I need to give up some more cash (and soon).

The Pres had a tough assignment: show us that he made a rational analysis about a challenging situation.  That over the last several months he listened; deliberated; came up with the best approach he could for dealing with our violent struggles in Iraq and Afghanistan.  I think he wanted me to understand his decision and his challenges.  Did he sell you? Influence you?

Ultimately, President O assured us that we’re turning the keys over to Iraq in the summer of 2011 and that we’ll start bringing American troops back from Afghanistan in July 2011 (after sending another 30,000 over soon).  He reminded me that this was about the security of the global commons, including the United States – and, that it’s about time I start to step up my understanding and support for this goal.

In a great move, we get a chance to discuss President O’s big move with a pro – international relations professor Andrew Bacevich.  Live chat with him today (seriously).  Got my questions lined up: is this really a fresh start? Is setting a withdrawal date is problematic? Did the President change your mind; inspire you; persuade you? Any room for a real compromise or is it just time to go home? Did President O give enough room for us to make the decision and reject his plan? Is securing the people of Afghanistan my responsibility; am I compelled to pay for the world’s security; and, what requires us to send others to their death for our safety?

Yesterday, I saw students come together and take to the streets in the name of love.  They had an opinion and got together to show the world how they felt.  Will we see you at another rally to express your opinion on President O’s new way forward?

Peace.
