Topic: Concept to Creation: Multimedia in Foundation Design
Overview
Christopher Field is a new media artist, designer and musician. His work investigates media culture, message, and commercial imagery through the installation of interactive video, sound, and web-based collage in physical space. With his late partner Sarah West, he co-founded the collaborative studio W/Field Workshop, which creates interactive installations, public art and sculpture. He holds a BA in Media Technology and Art from Denison University and an MFA in Dynamic Media from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. He is currently a Lecturer in Art at Boston University and lives and works in Massachusetts.
The media is the message, right? It’s up to the individual – the student, the designer, the laptop owner – to decipher what medium is essential to his or her idea, and to have the logistical wherewithal to execute it successfully and meaningfully. By giving students both a foundation and a breadth of experience within different branches of media, it’s possible to give them the understanding and literacy to create work in whatever medium best communicates their idea. Through a studio environment that underscores both technical acumen and conceptual development, students can ideally become media-savvy artists and designers in a time when interdisciplinary media dexterity is not only a vital quality, but an expected one. This brief presentation focuses on one multimedia project (and its outcomes) in AR123 Foundation Design.
