About the Shipley Center

Welcome to the Shipley Center

Founded in November 2021 through the generosity of BU Trustee Emeritus Richard C. Shipley, the Shipley Center (an expanding evolution of Digital Initiatives) supports Boston University’s faculty, departments, and schools with technology-enabled educational innovation in their residential courses and programs.

Working closely with Educational Technology and the Center for Teaching and Learning, the Shipley Center aims to celebrate and assist in thoughtful educational experimentation through offering instructional design, digital media production, educational technology discovery, project management, and funding support to faculty and leadership across all three BU campuses. What We Do

Multimedia Creation & Course Design

The Shipley Center team provides multimedia creation and course design services for BU faculty interested in developing digital or blended learning experiences. Our digital learning designers, media producers, and project managers support a variety of digital content production and delivery endeavors across BU, from helping launch select pilot projects in emerging technologies to incorporating multimedia assets in residential courses. Our team also provides media production support for University-wide educational training programs, and other special projects across our campus. Access resources to transform your teaching.

Project Exploration & Funding

Nurturing innovative ideas and approaches in digital education through incubating select pilot projects is embedded in the Shipley Center mission. We have a robust history of supporting experimental projects and emerging technologies, ranging from open online courses and innovations in project-based learning to lifelong learning portals and digital infrastructure for advising and mentoring. We are pleased to offer both funding and development support from project inception to pilot implementation and evaluation.

Guiding Principles

At the Shipley Center, we are inspired by creative courage and committed to high standards of quality, capacity building, flexibility, continuous learning and transparent processes.

All of our collaborations begin with questions and curiosity; together, we generate ideas, prototype solutions and share outcomes.

We endeavor to cultivate a culture that invites dialogue and collective sense-making, especially across differences, inviting multiple perspectives and expanding our frame of reference for what is possible.
