Learning Moment

BU Digital Learning & Innovation

The Learning Moment is a novel educational tool that utilizes interactive mapping technology to optimize experiential learning for its users. Learners are able to log “learning events” that occur during clinical work using an innovative mobile and web-based platform. Synthesis of discreet learning experiences into coherent, tangible “learning events” facilitates learner retention through self-reflection and accelerate the transition from experiential learning to contextualization, understanding, and application.

The collection of “learning events” in turn creates a searchable and shareable repository of clinically-oriented educational content for an entire learning community. As a result, dissemination of practice-changing knowledge is amplified from one learner to many. Each learner develops their own “learning portfolio” of clinical education experiences over the course of their training. Finally, Learning Moment helps educators develop a better understanding of the intricacies of teaching and learning in the modern clinical environment – for example, where does learning occur? Who do learners learn from? What is being learned?

Although Learning Moment has been piloted with medical students and residents in the Emergency Departments, the approach is scalable to other clinical departments and institutions across the nation as they seek to design the optimal learning ecosystem and evolve their teaching strategies to effectively reach all future physician-trainees.
