Position Title: Systems Administrator
Position Summary: The Information Technology Department of the Marine Biological Laboratory is seeking candidates for a Systems Administrator. This position will be responsible for the technical design, planning, implementation, support, and the highest level of performance tuning and recovery procedures for mission critical enterprise systems. Serves as a technical expert in the area of system administration for complex operating systems. Recommends the redesign and configuration of operating systems and system applications. Investigates and analyzes feasibility of system requirements and develops system specifications..
Additional Information: MAJOR DUTIES will include:• Manages the day-to-day operations of the Marine Biological Laboratory’s (MBL) physical and virtual environments by monitoring system performance, configuration, maintenance and repair.
• Develops new system and application implementation plans, custom scripts and testing procedures to ensure operational reliability.
• Responsible for managing, supporting, and optimizing MBL’s Active Directory environment to ensure the integrity and availability of systems and authentication, authorization, and LDAP-related services.
• Installs, modifies and maintains systems and utility software on server computer systems. Provides server support related to other software.
• Establishes guidelines and methods for the installation and management of the host computer operating systems, disk arrays, tape libraries and other components.
• Ensures high availability and acceptable levels of performance of mission critical host computer resources.
• Applies revisions to host system firmware and software. Works with vendors to assist support activities
• Develops procedures, programs and documentation for backup and restoration of host operating systems and host-based applications.
• Manage and maintain the company’s storage-based systems and the deployment of these storage technologies.
• Perform Email system administration.
• Manages the data center and computer host systems including hardware, software and equipment such as air-conditioning system, UPS (uninterrupted power system) and fire protection system.
• Stays current with technological developments in systems administration technology and recommends ways for IT management to take advantage of new technologies.
• Ability to work smoothly with a closely knit, diverse support team, and willingness and ability to learn and master new or unfamiliar technologies.
• Positions in this classification may perform all or some of the responsibilities above and all positions perform other related duties as assigned.

Occasionally to be on-call and work after hours and weekends as required to meet planned project deadlines and respond to unplanned outages.

Basic Qualifications: Requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related technical discipline; or equivalent technical experience/knowledge; and a minimum of 3-5 years of experience.• Ability to: Plan, organize and document complex system design activities and to configure systems to be consistent with institutional policies/procedures
• Experience with Windows and Linux system administration, enterprise backup and recovery procedures, and system performance monitoring tools.
• Strong knowledge of server virtualization environments.
• Scripting skills and ability to use them to automate system administration tasks such as system setup, patching and deployment
• Experience with enterprise SAN and NAS systems.
• Advanced knowledge of enterprise Microsoft Windows Server 2008/2012 and Linux OS.
• Knowledge of authentication systems (Active Directory, LDAP, Shibboleth, Kerberos etc…)
• Good understanding of network protocols (DNS, DHCP)
• Experience with MSSQL installations and troubleshooting.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with enterprise networking systems a plus.
Physical Requirements: Lift and carry equipment weighing 40lbs without assistance.
