Checkout Procedures
Students must make an appointment with their Resident Assistant to check out of their room. You should plan to fully clean and vacuum your room before you meet with your Resident Assistant to check out. You will be charged in instances where your room is left in an unsatisfactory condition and where the condition does not agree with the status of the room as indicated on the Check-In Room Condition Report (RCR) verified by you and your Resident Assistant upon your arrival. All furniture must be present and arranged as it was when you moved in. You will be billed for missing or damaged furniture. If individual responsibility for damages cannot be determined, all occupants of a room will be charged equally. There will be no exceptions. All items you received during registration (e.g. room key) must be returned to your Resident Assistant or the Student Life Office prior to your departure or a replacement fee will be assessed. (See “Room and Facility Condition/Care of Premises” in the Terms and Conditions of the Residence License Agreement).
Music Return Policy
Return all borrowed music from the Copland Library, Lenox Library, or Boston University Tanglewood Institute by the end of your workshop/program. You will be billed for any music not returned, and grades may be withheld until full payment is received.

Albany Airport Shuttle
BUTI offers a shuttle bus service for students to and from the Albany Airport for a one-way fee of $60 ($120 roundtrip). We do not offer shuttle service to airports other than Albany Airport. Service is only available on official move-in and move-out days. To request a seat on the shuttle from Albany Airport, you must submit the payment form found in the Student Life Packet, and submit your request via the electronic forms. The electronic forms will collect your flight information, which will be used to finalize our schedules.
Albany Airport is approximately 1 hour from the BUTI campus. Please keep this in mind when arranging arrival and departure information. On departures, you must also allow time to unload from the shuttle and process through airport security.
The BUTI Transportation Manager will confirm all arrival shuttles in early June, prior to your arrival. If your flight plan is changed, please let the Transportation Manager know as soon as possible. If your flight is delayed en route, BUTI will monitor the delay, and make accommodations as needed to transport you to West Street Campus.

International Student Travel and Visas
Students are considered international if they are not U.S. Citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents. BUTI has been advised by Boston University’s International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) that individuals participating in the Tanglewood Institute do not qualify for F-1 or J-1 student visa sponsorship due to the short-term vocational nature of the visit. International students should instead enter the U.S. in visitor status. Boston University will not issue an I-20 for students participating in the Tanglewood Institute.
All international students will be issued an invitation letter to aid in the visitor visa acquisition process. These letters will be sent by email in May.
Upon arrival at BUTI, international students must meet with the Student & Academic Services Coordinator to complete check-in procedures. At this time, students will present their passport, visa(s), and fronts and backs of their current I-94, as well as any documents supporting current study in the U.S. (other than BUTI). As students enter the U.S., they should be sure they receive an entry stamp, even if only crossing the U.S.-Canadian border. Please direct all questions to the Manager of Education and Programming at anmoore@bu.edu.
Non-resident international students may be liable for a 14% tax on scholarships offered through BUTI. If you are an international student who is offered a scholarship and you have questions, please contact the Manager of Enrollment and Student Engagement at sshecht@bu.edu.
