International Student Travel and Visas

Students are considered international if they are not U.S. Citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents. BUTI has been advised by Boston University’s International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) that individuals participating in the Tanglewood Institute do not qualify for F-1 or J-1 student visa sponsorship due to the short-term vocational nature of the visit. International students should instead enter the U.S. in visitor status. Boston University will not issue an I-20 for students participating in the Tanglewood Institute.

All international students will be issued an invitation letter to aid in the visitor visa acquisition process. These letters will be sent by email in May.

Upon arrival at BUTI, international students must meet with the Student & Academic Services Coordinator to complete check-in procedures. At this time, students will present their passport, visa(s), and fronts and backs of their current I-94, as well as any documents supporting current study in the U.S. (other than BUTI). As students enter the U.S., they should be sure they receive an entry stamp, even if only crossing the U.S.-Canadian border. Please direct all questions to the Manager of Education and Programming at anmoore@bu.edu.

Non-resident international students may be liable for a 14% tax on scholarships offered through BUTI. If you are an international student who is offered a scholarship and you have questions, please contact the Manager of Enrollment and Student Engagement at sshecht@bu.edu.
